LAPU-LAPU City mayor Paz Radaza yesterday expressed her approval of a plan by the National Geographic Society/Waitt Foundation to explore a cave in barangay Marigondon in search of artifacts that may explain how people lived in the past.
But Radaza warned that the exploration team should also coordinate with Marigondon barangay officials.
National Geographic Society sent Radaza a letter last month to ask permission and formally inform her of their plan to conduct a study of the Marigondon cave.
The exploration is done in cooperation with the National Museum of the Philippines and the University of Guam.
The three organizations seek to uncover artifacts and evidence of megafauna or large animals in the cave.
The research, which has a funding of US$50, 000, will hopefully uncover remains and tools that could explain how people lived in the area during prehistoric times.
Marigondon Cave is a popular diving spot of Mactan Island located 120 meters underwater and 75 meters from the shores of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa./Reporter Jucell Marie P. Cuyos
