The United Nations has lauded the Philippines for being at the forefront of disaster risk reduction, which was shown by its handling of the recent floods in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
In a meeting with members of UN body on disaster resilience at SM Mall of Asia, Mami Mizutori, new special representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), cited initiatives by the Philippine government and private sector in making the country one of the world’s most disaster resilient.
‘Shining example’
Mizutori said a “shining example” of public-private partnership (PPP) in disaster resilience was led by UNISDR Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (Arise)-Philippines and the National Resilience Council, both headed by Hans Sy, chair of the executive committee of SM Prime Holdings.
