Fake news: DFA denies Filipina in viral video underwent genital mutiliation

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday denied that the distraught Filipina. seen in a viral video, was allegedly subjected to genital mutilation by her employer in Bahrain.

In a statement clarifying the issue, the DFA also urged Filipinos to avoid posting unverified information on social media.

“While we appreciate the concern extended by our kababayan abroad about this particular case, we should also be careful about posting something of this kind on social media without first checking its veracity,” said Sarah Lou Arriola, DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs.

Ambassador to Manama Alfonso Ver said the woman was already in the Philippines when the post went viral. However, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano had her located and brought immediately to the hospital for medical examination.

The doctors found that the victim “had no indications whatsoever of genital mutilation,” however, she revealed signs of physical abuse and post traumatic stress disorder.

Ver said the DFA will provide for the continuing medical care of the victim who remains confined in the hospital. The DFA Office of Migrant Workers Affairs will also provide her family with financial assistance.

The ambassador said the embassy found out that the victim was underpaid by her employer.

He said they are already coordinating with officials of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority, who promised to cooperate in the investigation.   /vvp
