Filipinos in Saudi Arabia told to prepare for cyclone

Filipinos working in Saudi Arabia were advised to prepare for a powerful tropical cyclone in the western region of the Kingdom.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah warned Filipinos , especially those in Najran and the surrounding areas, of torrential rains and flashfloods.

Consul General Edgar Badajos said the Saudi weather agency has predicted heavy rains in some parts of the Kingdom from Saturday (May 26) to Tuesday (May 29).

“We would like to advise our Kababayans in the Western Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, especially those residing in Najran and nearby areas, to prepare for torrential rains, possible flashfloods, and decreased visibility as tropical cyclone Mekunu makes landfall in some parts of the Kingdom tonight,” the advisory said.

The DFA estimates that there were 8,000 Filipinos in Najran, 15,000 in Johann, and 13,000 in Khamis Mushayt.

“Dust brought about by the winds is also expected to reduce visibility over Tabuk, Madinah, Makkah, Sharqiyah and Riyadh. Rainy clouds are further expected over Jizan, Asir and Al Baha region,” the DFA said.

“The Saudi Civil Defense has advised the public to stay away from streams and torrents of valleys in areas to be affected by heavy rains,” it added.

Those in need of assistance may contact the Saudi Civil Defense at 998 or the consulate’s hotline at 0555219613. /ee
