US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim on Monday joined the nation in mourning the death of former Senate president Edgardo J. Angara.
Angara passed away on Sunday morning at his Tagaytay rest house.
“My thoughts are with the family of Senator Edgardo J. Angara, who helped foster US-PH ties through the creation of the Fulbright-Philippine Agriculture Scholarship Program and left a lasting legacy in Philippine education,” Kim said in a tweet.
Many of his colleagues at the Senate and the government regarded Angara as a champion of education and agriculture.
Angara briefly served as special envoy to the European Union under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Fulbright program is one of the premiere scholarship and exchange programs that send Filipinos to study in the US.
The agriculture scholarship program seeks to develop leaders in modernizing agriculture and fisheries. /je
