Militants hold demonstrations vs Trump in Manila

Various groups have converged in Mendiola, Manila against the visit of United States President Donald Trump, who is in the country for the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit and Related Meetings, which is set to open Monday morning at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Radyo Inquirer 990AM reports showed photos and videos of protesters holding banners and placards against Trump and denouncing the government’s “costly” spending for the conference.

One placard reads: “Ban Trump in the Philippines.”

Another banner reads: “Hanggang saan sana aabot ang P15.5 bilyon natin para sa Asean at Trump visit?”

From Mendiola, the report said the protesters would march to Taft Avenue.

Radyo Inquirer 990AM likewise reported that some groups against Trump have also gathered at the Liwasang Bonifacio also in Manila.  The report also showed protesters holding a huge streamer calling Trump a top “terrorist.”

Meanwhile, security was on heightened alert outside the PICC in Pasay City, the venue of the summit, in anticipation of militant groups that may hold rally in the area.

Trump is scheduled to have bilateral talks with President Rodrigo Duterte this Monday. /kga
