Aung San Suu Kyi, state counsellor and foreign minister of Myanmar, headed to the Philippines in laidback Burmese fashion Saturday at Clark International Airport.
The 72-year-old leader was in a traditional maroon Burmese dress with a light purple scarf draped over her right shoulder and wedge slippers.
Her plane landed past 2 p.m. and was welcomed by former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Angeles City Mayor Ed Pamintuan, and Clark International Airport President Alexander Cauguiran.
Myanmar is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), along with the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Suu Kyi will also rub elbows with the leaders and representatives of dialogue partners from Australia, Canadia, China, European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia, USA, and United Nations who will attend the Summit.
The Philippines is this year’s host of the Asean, which is celebrating its 50th founding anniversary. /atm
