A German wanted in his home country for a 10-year-old assault case was captured on Wednesday in Bohol after three years of hiding in the Philippines.
The Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) fugitive search unit collared Lothar Gunther Bebenroth, 52, in Alburquerque, Bohol, upon the request of the German Embassy.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente, citing their travel database, said the foreigner had been hiding in the country since May 1, 2014, when he arrived here as a tourist.
He said Bebenroth would be deported for posing a risk to public safety and for being an undocumented alien since his passport was canceled by the German government.
“He will be placed on our blacklist,” Morente said.
Bebenroth was wanted in Germany for attempting to stab dead another man more than 10 years ago.
He was convicted on Dec. 28, 2006. Bebenroth was sentenced to two years in prison.
The German Embassy had sought the BI’s help for his arrest.
