MOSCOW, Russia — Six distressed Filipino workers in Russia are set to be repatriated to the Philippines upon the instruction of President Duterte, according to Ambassador Carlos Sorreta.
Their repatriation comes as Mr. Duterte visits Russia for a four-day trip to improve economic and defense ties between the two countries.
Sorreta said the Philippine embassy in Russia had come to an arrangement with Moscow so that these workers would not be charged with violating immigration laws.
“So we are taking care of them and the Russian authorities know that they won’t be working… They are taking our word for it that they won’t run away and look for jobs,” he said.
He also said these workers would not be coming home to the Philippines at the same time as Mr. Duterte because the President would be making a stopover in Dubai before heading home.
During Mr. Duterte’s visit to the Middle East last month, he brought home with him 138 Filipino workers who had been stranded in the Gulf states.
These workers were undocumented Filipinos were granted amnesty by the Saudi government. JE
