Asean military chiefs to meet in Manila

Military chiefs from Southeast Asian nations will be in the country this week for a series of high-level meetings that will run for five days.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines, led by AFP chief Gen. Eduardo Año, will host the Asean chiefs of defense forces informal meeting (ACDFIM) on May 17 to 19. Heads of militaries from the Asean are expected to attend, said Armed Forces public affairs chief Col. Edgard Arevalo on Sunday.

The meetings are part of the Philippines’ chairmanship to the Asean this year.

Senior operations and intelligence officers will also attend the Military Operations and Military Intelligence Informal Meetings.

“The ACDFIM, and operations and intelligence meetings are annual events intended to provide an opportunity to discuss and assess in a very strategic, comprehensive, positive and productive manner all prominent issues and concerns of mutual interests,” Arevalo said.

Issues such as maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, counter-terrorism, infectious disease management, and peacekeeping are expected to be discussed in the five-day gathering. Frances Mangosing/JE
