In the male-dominated terrain at San Francisco’s Silicon Valley, a Filipina-American shines as one of the influential women in the realm of engineering and technology.
At the 32nd spot of Business Insider’s “43 Most Powerful Female Engineers of 2017” is Anne Aaron, current video algorithms director at Netflix.
“She leads a team of software engineers and research scientists. They make the software that enables more than 86 million Netflix members worldwide to watch streaming with the best possible quality,” the report described Aaron.
Aaron graduated university valedictorian and magna cum laude from the Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1998 and Computer Engineering in 1999. Soon after, she went to the US where she pursued her master’s and PhD in electrical engineering at Stanford University.

Before joining the entertainment company in 2011, Aaron worked as a senior software engineer for Video Codecs at Cisco Systems.
In an interview with Variety in 2015, Aaron discussed how Netflix’s Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion project could provide viewers with crystal clear videos with lesser bandwidth.
“A one-size-fits-all model doesn’t give you the most optimal quality…Each episode could be very different,” mentioned Aaron. “We want to be good stewards of the internet.”
