SAN FRANCISCO — Firefighters from the Philippines are now learning the ropes of life saving in Virginia Beach, Virginia, as part of a sister-city agreement with Olongapo City.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is training five Olongapo City firemen for six months on emergency services, according to Ruth Fraser, Virginia Beach Sister City Association.

The Filipino firefighters come with a set of skills that can help the other 29 firefighter-recruits of Virginia Beach in their training, according to a report by WAVY.Com.

The firefighters are on a nine-week emergency medical technology basic training course, after which they will pick up hoses and axes for an additional 11-week firefighting course.

The cadets are scheduled to complete their training around the 4th of July weekend.
