Spanish coast guard rescues 5 Filipino sailors in storm

SAN FRANCISCO—Spanish coastguard rescued five Filipino sailors February3 their ship was buffeted by a storm off northwestern Spain.

The Esnaad 715, an United Arab Emirates-flagged supply ship, was reportedly “in danger of sinking” 50 nautical miles from the port of La Coruna when the sailors were lifted to safety.

Adverse weather conditions in the area, with southeasterly winds of 45 knots, equivalent to more than or 50 miles per hour (80kph), complicated the rescue operation, the national coastguard said in a statement.

The sailors were flown to nearby Viveiro and a tugboat was dispatched to assess the Esnaad, which had been on the way from the Netherlands to Abu Dhabi.
