SAN FRANCISCO – You can now request as many copies of your marriage license as you wish in this city. But only one marriage at a time, please.

The city’s Office of the Assessor-Recorder has lifted the temporary limit on the number of official copies of marriage licenses individual can request.

A temporary policy limiting the number of official copies of marriage licenses per customer had been enacted last August due to a statewide shortage in bonded paper and to ensure that the maximum number of constituents would be served.

Since then, City Assessor Carmen Chu has collaborated with the County Recorders Association of California to identify alternative sources that meet state law requirements (state law requires specific security features for official copies of vital records to avoid counterfeits).

Official copies of marriage licenses now can be obtained by requesting an official copy through an in-person visit to the Office of the Assessor-Recorder at City Hall, by mail, or via the Internet. Official copies are currently $15 per copy.
