SAN FRANCISCO—Filipinos in Maui, Hawaii, on December 20 began a year-long celebration to mark the 110th anniversary of the arrival of the first Filipino sakadas who would work in the plantations of Hawaii.
The launch featured entertainment, parol and Filipino attire contests and free food at the Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center in Kahului. Vince Bagoyo, Jr. chaired the organizing committee for the event.
On May 22, 2015, Governor David Y. Ige declared December 20 “Sakada Day” in the State of Hawaii by signing HB 604 into law. The legislation recognizes that “the Filipino community has contributed significantly and substantially to the history, economy, culture, and heritage of Hawaii.”
Entertainers included Aunty Iola and Hālau Hula O Keola Aliʻi O Ke Kai, Bailes de Pilipinas, Dance International Production, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Filipino Folk Dance Troupe, Maui Filipino Community Council, Timpuyog, Sharon Zalsos, Miss Hawaii Filipina 2015 Chelsea Guzman, Miss Hawaiʻi Teen USA Joahnnalee Ucol, Miss Teen Maui Filipina 2015 Kawena Kan Hai.
