SAN FRANCISCO–Two Filipino ship officers were indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on December 15 for illegally discharging oily waste into U.S. waters earlier this year.
A federal grand jury in Greenville, North Carolina, returned the nine-count indictment against the men, chief engineer Rustico Yabut Ignacio and second engineer Cassius Flores Samson, according to a report by Splash247.com.
The two officers stand accused of using a “magic pipe” to circumvent pollution prevention equipment. They allegedly influenced other crewmen aboard Greek-owned cargo ship Ocean Hope to go along with the deception, fake relevant log entries and lie to U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) investigators about the incidents.
