Fired Filipino seafarer commits suicide

SAN FRANCISCO–A 31-year-old seafarer named John Gregg Elejan hanged himself at a crewing office in Manila on Saturday, December 5 and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

Elejan, was found hanging with a green water hose around his neck at the offices of Status Maritime Corporation, according to a report by Splash247.com.

Elejan, an oiler crewmember, had been let go by his firm due to unspecified “bad behavior.”

Recent reports from Swansea University show that seafaring as a career has the second highest rate of suicide in the world after coal mining.
