US submarine stops by Subic Bay

A US fast-attack submarine visited the country last week in Subic Bay as part of its Indo-Asia-Pacific deployment, the US Embassy said on Tuesday.

USS Tucson, a Los Angeles-class-fast attack submarine, has a crew of approximately 150.

The submarine conducted a multitude of missions and showcased the latest capabilities of the submarine fleet.

“The men have worked and trained hard to prepare the ship for deployment, and their performance over the past 11 months has been nothing less than exceptional,” said Senior Chief Electronics Technician Billy Daly Jr., USS Tuscon’s chief of the boat.

The submarine measures more than 360 feet long and is one of the most advanced submarines of the world. It is capable of anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, the US Embassy said.

The USS Tuscon is home-ported in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and it is the 59th Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine and the 20th of the improved Los Angeles attack submarines to be built.

Last month, the Arleigh Burke-class USS Fitzgerald was in Manila Bay for five days as part of the security preparations for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.
