SEATTLE—A Filipino community leader and a state senator received plaudits for their ongoing support Washington state’s Filipino communities.
The Filipino Community of Seattle honored Rey Pascua, president of the Filipino-American Community of Yakima Valley, and Sen. Jim Honeyford (GOP-Sunnyside) for advocating for the Filipino community as well as promoting leadership, said Sheila Burrus, the Seattle organization’s executive director.
Pascua received the Bayanihan Award, “signifying leadership that has made a difference.” Pascua successfully petitioned the Legislature and governor’s office the past six years to approve permanent designations of the proclamations in several communities throughout the state, including Yakima County, in the cities of Yakima and Wapato. Honeyford received the Bamboo Award for his friendship with the Filipino American community.
The awards were given during the Seattle Filipino Community’s annual gala held last Saturday, November 14 in Seattle.
