Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has arrived in Manila late Monday afternoon to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit.
O’Neill arrived at Villamor Airbase at 4:45 p.m.
He was welcomed by Philippine Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Bienvenido Tejano and Education Secretary Armin Luistro. Also present was Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Honrado.
In a speech last October during the 3rd Apec Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry, O’Neill vowed to continue Papua New Guinea’s engagement with the Apec.
“Participation in Apec benefits our grassroots people by creating opportunities to feed into the broader economy as it expands. Papua New Guinea will continue to enhance our engagement with Apec,” he said.
Papua New Guinea became a member-economy of the Apec in 1993.
O’ Neill is the fourth leader who arrived in Manila for the Apec, following Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, former vice president of Taiwan Vincent Siew, and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
