Martial law film, Elwood Perez’s latest, in SF indies film fest

SAN FRANCISCO — Filipino master filmmaker Elwood Perez will receive this year’s Gawad Gintong Ani (Golden Harvest/Life Achievement) award from the FACINE/22 film festival, during the U.S. premiere of his latest film, “Esoterika: Maynila,” on Wednesday, October 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Roxie Theater.

The 22nd annual FACINE festival will close with the awarding of the Gawad Lingap Sining [Art Nurturer] award to Cinema One Originals, a grants-giving body recognized for its immense contribution to Philippine independent cinema, followed by the U.S. premiere of the martial-law themed film, Jet Leyco’s “Bukas Na Lang Sapagka’t Gabi Na” (Leave It For Tomorrow, For Night Has Fallen) on October 24, Saturday at 9:00 p.m.

The festival, co-presented with the Philippine American Writers and Artists (PAWA, Inc.), runs from October 21 through October 24 at the Roxie Theater, 3117 – 16th Street, San Francisco.

The annual festival, the longest-running event in the U.S., has been the premier showcase of new works and Filipino film classics in the United States for the past 22 years. It is organized by FACINE or Filipino Arts & Cinema International, a not-for-profit media arts organization based in San Francisco that “aims to advance the interests of cinemas from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora.”

“Bukas Na Lang Sapagka’t Gabi Na”

This year’s festival features the special screenings of important films by independent filmmakers from the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora, including Adolfo Alix, Jr., Sari and Kiri Dalena, Richard Soriano Legaspi, Christopher Ad Castillo, Joni Gutierrez, Janice Villarosa, Nestor Abrogena, Nanette Matilac, Jet Leyco, Cecilio Asuncion, Joe Bacus, Angelo Santos, Seymour Barros-Sanchez, Emerson Reyes, Epoy Deyto, Breech Quincy Quilantang, Arnel Ramos Felix and Christian Paolo Lat. They represent a wide array of new works on varying subjects and genre will be presented in different programs.
