LOS ANGELES – A Filipino immigrant who is in the U.S. illegally and also a registered sex offender has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, after he was freed on bond by the judge overseeing his deportation proceedings, authorities said July 21.
Keane Dean, 26, was placed in immigration detention in October after serving time for burglary and indecent exposure. Immigration authorities were trying to have him deported.
Dean was denied bond in December but released in April after posting a $10,000 bond granted by an immigration judge at a hearing mandated by the federal courts.
Dean was nabbed after a teenage girl reported missing by her parents was found in his garage. The girl said Dean befriended her at a grocery store and he had sexually assaulted her. Dean has pleaded not guilty to two felony sex charges. He is due back in court August 18.
Dean’s arrest is bound to add fuel to the national uproar over the fatal shooting of a woman in San Francisco by a suspect who had been repeatedly deported and was released from jail before the shooting.
