Role models to speak in SF Bay Area Filipino kids’ cultural camp

DALY CITY, California — Parents who want their kids to learn more about their Filipino cultural heritage and be inspired by Filipino American role models can let them join the third annual Filipino Cultural Immersion Summer Camp for Filipino youth from 10-15 years old.
Summer Camp sponsors announced the opening of registration. The sponsors are University of the Philippines alumni with UPAA-SF, with the support of the Philippine Consulate General of San Francisco and RAMAR Foods Scholarship Foundation.
Two-week camp is held on weekdays from July 20 to 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Room of the Holy Child St. Martin Church on 777 Southgate St. in Daly City. There will be a parents orientation meeting on July 20 and Camp Graduation is on July 31.
Experts on various aspects of Filipino culture such as history, Kulintang music, native folk dances, literature, history, arts, Tagalog, local cuisine, wellness,and martial arts will teach the children.
A new feature of the camp this year is having Filipino community leaders and achievers speak to the campers. Role models invited include Milpitas Mayor Joe Esteves, SF Mayor’s Office Adviser on Education and Family Services Hydra Mendoza, Balitang America’s Henni Espinosa, Daly City officials like Mayor Ray Buenaventura, council member and former mayor David Canepa, as well as Bank of America VP Sonia Delen, among others.
“My child always came home speaking new Tagalog phrases every day when he did not even speak a word of Tagalog before the camp,” said one Filipino parent whose child attended last year’s camp.
UPAA-SF Board Chair and the Camp’s Program Chair Letty Quizon said, “We hope to top the last two successful Filipino cultural immersion camps which drew a lot of positive feedback from parents and participants and the community.”

The Filipino Cultural Immersion Camp is a banner project of the UPAASF and is made possible through a grant of the Ramar Foods Scholarship Foundation headed by Ramar Foods President Susie Quesada, and with the support of community partners that include the Philippine Consulate General of San Francisco, the Office of the San Francisco Mayor’s Adviser on Education and Family Services, and the Holy Child St. Martin Church.
