The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has lifted the total deployment ban it imposed in Liberia following World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration that it is now Ebola-free.
“The POEA Governing Board, in a meeting duly convened, resolves to lift the deployment ban in Liberia,” the POEA said in a resolution.
The resolution was issued after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced the lowering of the Alert Level from Level 3 (Voluntary Repatriation) to Level 1 (Precautionary Phase) in Liberia.
With the lifting of the ban, the POEA will now allow the processing and deployment of all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), both vacationing workers and new hires, to Liberia.
The POEA imposed a total deployment ban in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone on Dec. 8, 2014, due to the massive spread of Ebola in the three countries.
It also instructed all Filipinos in the said countries to return to the Philippines.
On May 9, 2015, the DFA decided to lower the alert level in Liberia in view of the declaration of the WHO that the country is now Ebola-free.—Tina G. Santos
