Pinoy inventor wins in int’l environment tilt

Ingenious Amin “Ahmed” Turabin Hataman wins the 2015 International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering and Environmental Project) or I-Sweep Olympiad bronze medal for his biodegradable plastic invention made from “nata de coco.”

Fourteen-year-old Amin “Ahmed” Turabin Hataman won the bronze medal for his entry, a type of biodegradable plastic made from nata de coco, a coconut derivative, that disintegrates after several days of exposure to elements, at the 2015 International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environmental Project (I-Sweep) Olympiad.

It ranked third among 462 entries.

I-Sweep is a science competition for high school students, launched in 2008 in Houston, Texas, that accepts inventions complementing global environment-protection thrusts.

Hataman is a Grade 8 (second year high school) student at Fountain International School in Manila. He is the eldest of five children of Mujiv Hataman, regional governor of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Princess Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Anak Mindanao party-list representative.

Hataman attended the awarding ceremony at George R. Brown Convention Center. He wore ethnic Tausog and Yakan clothes and the country’s national barong Tagalog to showcase the ethnicity and cultural identities of the culturally pluralistic Filipino communities.

Gold medal

Hataman’s invention previously bagged a gold medal at the 2014 International Young Inventors Olympiad in held in Tbilisi City, Georgia.

Gov. Mujiv Hataman has been working with the Department of Science and Technology in ARMM to conduct a comprehensive study on his son’s invention for possible use by domestic industries.
