Filipino and Vietnamese troops played ball games and other sports on Wednesday at a Philippine detachment in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).
The games took place on Parola Island (Northeast Cay) in the Kalayaan Island Group (Spratly Islands).
A total of 62 personnel from the Philippine Navy and the same number from Vietnamese People’s Navy participated in the event. Among the games played were volleyball, football, tug-of-war, sack race and centipede race.
Philippine Navy spokesperson Col. Edgardo Arevalo said the Vietnamese “were encouraged by the results and they would like to have a follow-on.”
“The information that we had was they were happy about the turnout of the activity and they would like to have another similar event,” he said.
The Vietnamese Navy held a similar event last year in their detachment Pugad Island (Southwest Cay) located a few miles away. RC
