CHICAGO — A popular Chicago museum is throwing open its collection of artifacts from the Philippines to area artists.

The Field Museum is giving five Filipino-American artists access to the items. They’ll use the objects as inspiration to create paintings.

It’s all part of a project called, “Art and Anthropology: Portrait of the Object as Filipino.” The artwork will be exhibited this coming fall.

A Monday statement from The Field Museum says it has more than 10,000 objects from the Philippines. Many are more than a century old.

The project is a partnership between the museum and the Filipino American community in the Chicago area. Artists from both the United States and the Philippines are involved.
