DFA: Veloso execution any time after 9 p.m.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) had said Mary Jane Veloso could be executed on Tuesday any time after 9 p.m., Philippine time.

“It could be any time after 9 p.m., Manila time. It could even be after midnight,” foreign affairs spokesperson Charles Jose said.

A Twitter post by Edre Olalia, Veloso’s private lawyer and National Union of People’s Lawyers secretary general, said he could not bring home Veloso alive.

“I could not bring Darren’s mom home alive,” Olalia said.

Veloso’s execution came after the Indonesia’s Sleman District Court rejected the second appeal for a judicial review filed by the Philippine government.

President Benigno Aquino III also appealed to Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the sidelines of the Asean summit in Malaysia to spare Veloso’s life.

Widodo, however, sealed the fate of Veloso by saying that Indonesia would uphold its law on drug cases. RC
