As the date of execution loomed for Filipina Mary Jane Veloso and eight other drug convicts on Indonesia’s death row, that government has begun preparations for their execution and burial.
In an article published by Indonesian news network, Jawa Poss National Network, crosses and caskets intended for the drug convicts were shown.
The article said that the crosses were for Veloso, Australian citizens Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian drug convict Rodrigo Gularte and Nigerians Okwudili Oyatanze and Sylvester Obiekwe.
The date indicated on the crosses was “April 29, 2015.”
Veloso was convicted due to a drug-related offense after she was arrested in 2010 at Yogyakarta Airport for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin placed in her bag.
The government is scrambling to save Veloso, with President Benigno Aquino III leading the effort as he seeks a dialogue with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the sidelines of the 26th Asean Summit in Malaysia. AJH/CB
