Philippines to appeal Indonesia ruling to execute Filipina

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is appealing the case of a Filipina in Indonesia who has been sentenced to death for drug smuggling, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday.

“The Philippine government is making all the appropriate representations with the Indonesian government at all levels on our intention to file a request for judicial review,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a text message.

“In coordination with the defense lawyer, the formal application for judicial review was filed on January 19, 2015 at the district court of Justice of Sleman, Yogyakarta,” he said,

The Filipina was previously arrested at the Yogyakarta airport in April 2010 for carrying at least two kilograms of heroin.

She is on death row and is set to be executed by firing squad along with 10 others, two of whom were leaders of a drug smuggling gang.

“We continue to provide the Filipino with all necessary and possible assistance at all stages of the judicial process. The family of the Filipino is constantly being provided updates on the case,” Jose said.
