Filipino crewman severely burned on ship off Chile

DALY CITY, California — A Filipino seafarer has been hospitalized for severe burns after a compressor explosion on his ship off Chile on December 2.

The 34-year-old Filipino third mate from a K-Line-managed bulker, Sunny Royal (built 2011) suffered injuries and burns to his face and upper body, according to a report by Tradewindsnews.com.

The Chilean navy said the 59,000-dwt Sunny Royal was passing through the Strait of Magellan south of Punta Arenas when the accident happened.

A navy transport ship took the injured sailor back to Punta Arenas after a medical team had treated him on the bulker.
