Abu Sayyaf frees Malaysian captive

MANILA, Philippines—The Abu Sayyaf Group released its Malaysian captive in Sulu on Tuesday, a Malaysian publication said.

Malaysian and Filipino mediators secured the release of Chan Sai Chuin, a 32-year-old fish breeder, The Star Online said.

He was abducted in his farm in Kampung Sapong in Kunak, Malaysia, on June 16.

A belated military report said Chan was released by his abductors in Sitio Timahu in Barangay Tubig Dakula, Indanan, Sulu, on December 9 at 11 p.m.

“Accordingly, after the release, the kidnap victim boarded a speed boat and proceeded to Malaysia,” Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Captain Rowena Muyuela said.

He was brought to Sandakan at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

A security source, who spoke in the condition of anonymity, said the family of Chan paid P13 million pesos to the group of Abu Ramen under subleader Alhabsi Misaya for his release.
