Filipino math aces win 2 gold, 13 silver, 3 bronze medals at India math contest

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines won a total of 18 medals, including two golds, in the just-ended 2014 Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (Wizmic), held from Oct. 18 to 21 in Lucknow, northern India.

Represented by 16 senior primary students, mostly from Metro Manila, the country also bagged 13 silver and three bronze medals in the 12-nation contest where the young Filipino numbers aces placed third overall.

The teams from Thailand and Indonesia topped this year’s Wizmic with 16 and 13 gold medals, respectively, according to Dr. Simon Chua, president of the non-government Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Phils. (MTG) and head of the Philippine math delegation.

In an e-mail to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Chua on Tuesday night said the country’s golds came courtesy of Jose Lorenzo Abad, a Grade 6 student from the Colegio San Agustin-Makati and Aiman Andrei Kue, a Grade 5 student from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School in Zamboanga City.

The silver medalists were Andrei Lenard Chan and Stephen James Ty, both from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Jhervey Edric Cheng from Chiang Kai Shek College; Kristin Angela Narag from Colegio San Agustin-Biñan; Audrey Gabrielle Tan from St. Peter The Apostle School; Wesley Gavin Palomar from Falcon School; Jodi Marcia Arcadio from Notre Dame of Metro Manila; Hiraya Marcos from Philippine Cultural College; Gregory Charles Tiong from St. Jude Catholic School, and Casey Jules Uygongco from Hua Siong College of Iloilo.

The bronze medals were won by Jose Oliver Narvasa from Notre Dame of Metro Manila and Jannica Allison Lim from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School. The Filipinos also garnered three silvers and a bronze in the Team contest.

Host India placed fourth overall. The other participating countries were Iran, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The Philippine team has been scheduled to return to Manila on Wednesday (Oct. 22) afternoon.
