MANILA, Philippines – A mother’s love is unconditional.

And so it is with Lisa Pemberton, mother of US Marine Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, the suspect in the killing of transgender Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude in Olongapo City.

She assured her 19-year-old son that she and the family love him “very much” and that “nothing is going to change that”.

Lisa Pemberton’s statements were contained in a report released Thursday by the South Coast Today, a newspaper based in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Scott Pemberton, uncle of the US Marine and a former professional boxer in the US, in the same report maintained that his nephew a “good kid” and asserted that the case should be investigated further.

“I know the kid very well. He’s a really good kid. I personally feel there is more to the story,” the older Pemberton said.

The report said that the 19-year-old Pemberton graduated in 2013 from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School.

A separate report from the Marine Corps Times stated that Pemberton only enlisted with the US Marines last year and was an anti-tank missile man of the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines.

A murder complaint against Pemberton was filed before the Olongapo City Prosecutor’s Office Wednesday by Laude’s family.
