DALY CITY, California — Vallejo police are looking for the suspects in the fatal shooting of a Filipino American man and the wounding of another victim at a Vallejo hotel on Sunday, September 21.

Robby Poblete, 23, of Fairfield, California, was shot and killed by unknown assailants at the parking lot of the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites on Admiral Callaghan Lane.

Vallejo is a city north of San Francisco with one of the oldest Filipino communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Poblete was the son of former San Francisco Chronicle columnist Pati Navalta Poblete, who has contributed to INQUIRER.net (see RELATED STORY below).

Police responded to reports of shots fired at about 5:30 p.m. Upon arrival at the scene, they found the two victims.

Poblete was found next to a vehicle in the parking lot with multiple gunshots wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Another victim, a 72 year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries and was expected to survive. Hotel employees identified him as the owner of the hotel.

They also said the shooting may have occurred during a robbery, but it was unclear if the front desk was the intended target, according to the Vallejo Times Herald.

The suspects fled the scene in a black sedan. Authorities are checking surveillance video as the investigation continues, the employees said.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Vallejo Police Department at 707-648-4524.
