MANILA, Philippines — The top officials of Aegis Malaysia personally met with the Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur Wednesday to convey their apology after a video advertisement that showed how Philippines was not a good investment destination for global businesses went viral.
“Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Eduardo Malaya received Aegis BPO Sdn Bhd officials, who personally reiterated their company’s apologies for the uploading of a video which placed the Philippines in an unfavorable light,” the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia said in a statement.
“Aegis Senior Vice President-Corporate Divya Dutta and Associate Vice President for Human Resource P. Ganesan said that they did not authorize the uploading of the said video, which was created by a local agency,” it said.
The BPO company earned the ire of netizens after the released video advertisement enumerated several reasons why Malaysia was better than Philippines including being safer from natural calamities like earthquakes and typhoons.
The video also said in the advertisement that multinational businesses should consider the lack of government support, security problems, and inadequate infrastructure when they decide to choose and investment location.
The Philippine Embassy in Malaysia immediately wrote to the head office of Aegis to explain the video after it went viral on social media.
“[The officials of Aegis] added that Aegis, a global company headquartered in India, values its relationship with the Philippines and is indebted to the Philippine Government for Aegis’ growth over the years,” the statement said.
Before personally meeting with Philippine Embassy officials, Aegis had already issued a public apology saying “we regret the upload of the recent video, which was developed locally by an agency and uploaded in error and the contents were not approved by Aegis Corporate.”
Aegis has had a great experience in the Philippines and this has been one of the keys to our success,” they said in their statement.
