MANILA, Philippines – August 25 is a significant holiday, as we celebrate National Heroes’ Day. During this day we commemorate everyone who fought hard for our country’s freedom. We praise those who have put in so much effort in order for our country to progress and stand on its own. We honor the brave men who fought numerous battles and wars that our country went through. But we tend to forget to pay tribute to those who traveled so far in the hopes of providing better lives for their families, our modern-day heroes – overseas Filipino workers.
In celebration of National Heroes’ Day, a short documentary is making the rounds online that pays tribute to the OFWs all over the world. Entitled Bisita sa Bayani, the video features Amiel Saldua, an OFW chef in Singapore, who has been away from his family.
He tried his luck in landing a job in a neighboring country, and fate favored his side. He hasn’t been back on Philippine soil for the longest time, in order to save more money to provide for his wife and daughter back home.
Little did he know that he was in a sweet surprise that would pay off all his hard work abroad. His wife and daughter surprised him by visiting him in Singapore and spending quality time together.
The video caught the attention of a lot of Filipinos since it hits close to home. It’s currently going viral, due to the fact that a lot of Filipino citizens can relate to the story of Amiel. It captured a lot of positive comments – the viewers expressed their deeper appreciation to their relatives and loved ones who are OFWs, and commended this effort that touched so many hearts.
Here are some thoughts shared by the audience, and the featured family in the Bisita sa Bayani video:
Even foreigners who watched the video were deeply moved:
It really feels good to know that we have heroes who give up everything for those who matter. The Filipino will truly do everything for his or her loved ones. Philippine Airlines honor and salute you – our heroes abroad, at home, and in our hearts.
