Fil-Am press club in LA elects new officers

LOS ANGELES, California – The Filipino American Press Club of Los Angeles, founded in 1978, elected a new president and set of officers at a recent general membership meeting.

Evelyn Aviado Portugal, a long-time member of the press club was elected president at the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) near downtown Los Angeles. Portugal, as provided by the by-laws ratified in the same meeting, will also chair the board of directors.

The new set of officers elected with Portugal were Muni Zano, vice-president; Dante Ochoa, secretary; Lou Sabas, treasurer; Cecile Ochoa, auditor.

The new board of directors are Dr. Ludy Ongkeko, Naomi P. Armada, Evelyn A. Portugal, Muni Zano, Dante Ochoa, Cecile Ochoa and Lou Sabas.

Portugal, a member of the press club since the 1980s, was the bureau chief of Hong Kong-based Asian Finance Publications, Ltd. and the Los Angeles bureau chief of the Philippines News.

She hosted her own LA radio program “Ang Inyong Kaibigan, Evelyn” in the early ’90s, and has been the advertising manager of the Beverly Hills Courier in Beverly Hills for the past 19 years.

She is a graduate of University of the Philippines, attended UCLA and was awarded a certificate of completion of the Bible Institute program at Loyola Marymount University.
