Initial investigation by the Port Police and the Federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration showed that the victim died in “an industrial accident” on the cargo vessel the Cap Posada, Port of LA spokesman Phillip Sanfield told the Inquirer in a phone interview.
Sanfield said the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head after a cable broke on the ship while containers were being moved. The body was found at 10:45 p.m. and the estimated time of death was between 10:15 and 10:30 p.m., he said.
The victim’s identity has not been released, as of posting time. The Los Angeles County Department of Coroner and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement are coordinating notification of the victim’s family and the Philippine consulate.
The Cap Posada, which arrived at the port’s Berth 136 Wednesday afternoon, left this morning, Sanfield said.
