MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed hope that the political situation in Thailand will be resolved peacefully after a court ordered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s removal from office.

“The Philippine Government notes the recent developments on the political situation in Thailand, particularly today’s decision by the Constitutional Court,” DFA said in a statement Wednesday.

“In this regard, as a fellow member of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), the Philippines hopes that the people of Thailand will find an early resolution to the political situation in a manner that upholds the rule of law and preserves peace and harmony throughout the Kingdom,” it said.

Yingluck, Thailand’s first female prime minster and brother of former prime minster Thaksin Shinawatra, was removed from office on charges of abuse of power.

Thaksin was removed from office in a military coup in 2006 also after allegations of abuse of power.
