Singapore president in Manila for 4-day visit

MANILA, Philippines—Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam arrived Monday night  in Manila for a four-day visit to discuss trade and defense ties with the Philippines and provide further assistance to survivors of Super  Typhoon “Yolanda “ (Haiyan) in the Visayas.
Tan was  accompanied by his wife Mary and top Singaporean official.
Tan and his state delegation on Thursday will offer a wreath at the statue of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Luneta Park in Manila before proceeding to Malacañang for a state luncheon with President Benign Aquino III.
“President Tan will meet with President Aquino to discuss matters of mutual concern, including cooperative activities in defense, trade and investment, and the Filipino community in Singapore, among others. He will also meet with the Philippine-Singapore Business Council,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

DFA added that Tan will also fly to Basey, Samar, to personally hand over medical supplies to the Basey District Hospital, a facility jointly being rehabilitated by the Singapore Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

This is the first state visit of the Singaporean President to the Philippines, DFA said.
