MANILA, Philippines—He may have left the Philippines, but his heart rightfully belonged to a Filipina.

Last Saturday afternoon, former United States Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas, 57-years-old, and Mithi Aquino, 36, were married in a private gathering at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Manhattan’s East 76th Street in New York City.

Filipino-American priest Father Freddy Balinong officiated the wedding.

In a feature article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer dated Sept. 8, 2013, it was the first time the hefty diplomat ever mentioned of Aquino and their relationship.

“Well, I am very fortunate to have met a Filipino woman,” Thomas told PDI Lifestyle editor Thelma Sioson San Juan.

According to San Juan’s interview, friends of the couple disclosed that the two met in a cruise ship where Aquino was training the staff.

Both Thomas and Aquino have children before getting married, the former has a daughter living in the US and the latter has a son and daughter, who are both still young.

Before the marriage, Thomas already has one arm around Aquino in social functions and civic works that the ambassador had attended.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas would now settle in Arizona where the Jolo-native would continue her career as a designer and the former ambassador to teach at the Arizona State University.

“I’m just happy for the wedding, I feel so lucky to have Harry,” Aquino said in a television interview.
