In its tsunami advisory issued at 1:44 p.m. on Monday, Phivolcs said, “No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on historical and tsunami data.”
The agency, however said, “Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.”
The tremor, measured at a preliminary magnitude 7, jolted Northern California at around 1:18 p.m. (Philippine time) with its epicenter at 40.8 kilometers northwest off the coast and at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs concluded, “This is for information only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.”
