6th grader from UPIS aces international math tilt in Taiwan

Grade 6 student John Henry Marquez of the University of the Philippines Integrated School in Quezon City aced the 2014 International Mathematics Assessments for Schools (IMAS) in Taiwan with a perfect score.

This was announced on Friday by Dr. Sun Wen-hsien, president of the Chiu Chang Mathematics Education Foundation in Taipei and chairman of the IMAS Executive Board.

Sun joined Dr. Simon Chua, president of the nongovernment Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG) and also an IMAS official, in awarding the 64 Filipino students who won top honors, including nine gold medals, in this year’s edition of the correspondence-type competition based in the Taiwanese capital.

Marquez was one of only six students from among 30,000 in 11 countries who scored 100 percent.

There were three perfect scorers from China and two from Taiwan, Sun told the Inquirer.
