MANILA, Philippines? The Malaysian high court acquitted Armah Candelario of drug raps charges last week, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Monday.
Candelario, who was accused of drug trafficking in August 2008, was acquitted last June 25 after reasonable doubt was established in her case and will be repatriated to Manila soon, said Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano Lecaros in his report to DFA Secretary Alberto Romulo.
The Malaysian court acknowledged that Candelario might not have known the contents of a leather travel bag a friend had asked her to deliver to another.
Candelario was originally charged with trafficking of 450.8 grams of heroin and 175.8 grams of monoacetylmorphine in August 2008, but the charge was later amended to drug possession.
Candelario first came to Malaysia in September 2007 on the invitation of a Zambian national she met on the Internet. From November 2007 to August 2008, records showed that she had occasionally traveled to India, China, and Vietnam. During these travels, she brought with her a piece of luggage that belonged to another friend.
Following the acquittal, Philippine embassy officials said Candelario will be transferred from the Kajang prison to the immigration for her eventual repatriation to Manila.
Candelario?s family members in Manila and Canada have been informed of her repatriation.
