P200-M worth of marijuana seized in Kalinga

MANILA, Philippines—Joint police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency elements swooped down on a marijuana plantation in Cordillera Thursday and seized marijuana plants and seedlings amounting to almost P200 million, police said on Friday.

The 60,000 square meter marijuana plantation was found in the sub-village of Bangabanga in Tabuk town, Kalinga, a report from Cordillera police said.

Anti-drug operatives raided the plantation at 5 a.m. Thursday, but no suspect was arrested. Instead, authorities uprooted several marijuana plants amounting to P186 million.

The marijuana plants were brought to Kalinga police for disposal, the report said. Abigail Kwok


Cops warn about thieves disguised as maids

MANILA, Philippines—Scrutinize your house help thoroughly or keep your cash and valuables in a secure vault.

Police reiterated this warning on Thursday following a complaint by a 32-year-old businesswoman who lost over millions of pesos in cash and valuables, including an engagement ring valued at P1.2 million.

Police Officer 2 Pascual Fabreag of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, said the victim, Angelita Anrieta-Llanes, 32, filed a complaint against her maid Ivy Gamboa Villacorta, alias Ivy Ayong, 28, for allegedly stealing her cash and valuables on Wednesday.

Llanes told police that she lost from the robbery, P6,500 in cash, $2,000 in cash, an engagement ring worth P1.2 million, a wedding ring worth P160,000, a Nintendo DS worth P18,000, and mobile phone worth P6,000.
