SYDNEY, Australia - An Australian plane bound for the Philippines returned to Sydney for safety reasons on Monday after an indicator light came on in the cockpit, an airline spokeswoman said.

The Boeing 767 carrying 158 passengers turned back after the light began flashing several hours into the flight, indicating the possibility of a problem with the wet weather anti-skid landing gear.

"The flight was on its way to Manila and there was an indicator defect in the cockpit for the anti-skid indicator," the spokeswoman told Australian news agency AAP.

"As there were thunderstorms forecast for Manila the decision was made to return the aircraft to Sydney."

The spokeswoman said it was not known whether it was simply a defect in the indicator light or not. The plane landed safely back in Sydney later Monday.

Last week a Qantas Boeing 747 from San Francisco to Sydney turned back after one of its four engines failed, blowing a hole in its metal casing.
