MANILA, Philippines? The Philippine consulate general in Hong Kong is awaiting further instructions from the home office after detained Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson (1st district) declined its offer of assistance in his drug trafficking charges in the Chinese territory.
?We offered assistance and he declined it. He is not talking to consulate officials. What can we do? We can?t ask him to explain why. I will just wait for instructions from the Department of Foreign Affairs,? Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong Claro Cristobal said in an interview with the Inquirer.
He said that Singson had hired private lawyers to defend him and refused to talk about the details of his case with consulate officials who visited him.
The congressman, a son of Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis ?Chavit? Singson, was arrested on July 11 at the Hong Kong International Airport by immigration authorities after 26.1 grams of cocaine and two tablets of the sedative Valium were found in his possession.
He was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs pursuant to Hong Kong?s Dangerous Drug Ordinance in the Tsuen Wan Magistracy?s Courts. Singson appeared in court with private counsel on July 22 and applied for bail but was rejected. The hearing of the case was adjourned to Aug. 19 pending receipt of a certification from Hong Kong authorities on the findings on the drugs found in his possession.
