MANILA, Philippines? No Filipino was killed when six suicide bombers and gunmen attacked a USAID compound in Northern Afghanistan Friday, killing five foreign nationals, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
The foreign office made the clarification after receiving a report from the Philippine embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, to correct reports that a Filipino was among those killed.
However, a Filipino named Joven Topanan was injured in the attack and is currently being treated at the Provincial Reconstruction Team Offices in the relatively peaceful province of Konduz, the embassy reported.
Topanan works at Edinburg International, a security sub-contractor of Development Alternatives Inc. The latter runs a local governance and community development program in Konduz, in cooperation with local authorities.
The DFA said the embassy was coordinating with Topanan?s principals in ensuring his safety and welfare.
The DFA reiterated the government?s ban on deployment of workers in Afghanistan in view of the unstable security situation in that country.
