OFW suspect in HK slay case extradited

MANILA, Philippines ? The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) extradited on Friday a former overseas Filipino worker accused of murdering an American couple in Hong Kong seven years ago.

NBI Interpol division chief and lawyer Claro de Casto Jr. said that Magno Cruz Manalili, 40, a former house helper, was turned over to the custody of Hong Kong authorities to face the charge of two counts of murder filed against him after an arrest warrant was issued by Shatin Magistrate Tong Man.

De Castro explained that the extradition pushed through after Manila regional trial court branch 37 Judge Virgilio Macaraig issued on March 5 an order granting the petition filed by the Hong Kong court, and after Manalili?s subsequent appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court, which resolved with finality the issue on Aug. 4.

Manalili stands accused of stabbing to death his employers American couple Ng Ka-Mong and Sun King-Man inside their home at 151 Pai Tau Village, Shatin, New Territories in Hong Kong on April 12, 2003.

He went under suspicion when, on the same night of the murder, he paid a surprise visit to a neighbor and asked to sleep over claiming that he could not sleep in his own quarters at his employer?s house. Several hours after, he bought a one-way ticket back to Manila.

The move prompted a Hong Kong magistrate to issue an arrest warrant against him on June 2, 2003 and to immediately coordinate with the Interpol. A provisional arrest warrant was immediately issued by a Manila court.

Manalili was nabbed by members of the Philippine National Police on Dec. 13, 2004 by virtue of the provisional arrest warrant and was turned over and detained for six years at the NBI before his extradition.
